The hatch at the top left of this photograph accesses the rooms below the pad at Complex 34. Due to the high water table, many of the underground structures at the pads on Cape Canaveral were actually built at ground level and the filled over to make them "underground." These rooms connect to the cable way which in turn connects to the blockhouse.
Complex 34 was the launch site of Apollo 7 which carried Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, R. Walter Cunningham into orbit aboard the first Apollo mission.
Complex 34 is also the site of the tragic Apollo I fire which claimed the lives of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.
