The Saturn IB rocket sat directly
above this launch ring on the rocket stand. The deluge pipe around the interior
of the ring was used to dampen the flames. This is the largest remnant left
at Complex 34, excluding the blockhouse.
Complex 34 is also the site of the tragic Apollo I fire which claimed the
lives of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.
This image is made looking straight up through the ring. The launch ring was
restored in 1998. For an idea of how it now looks go to Launch
Ring Restored, Complex 34, CCAFS, FL. The ring is already showing signs
of rust after only a few years. Cape Canaveral has one of the most corrosive
atmospheres of any place on earth.
