This is a detail of the launch ring at Complex 34, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The corrosive ocean air deteriorated the metal portions of the launch ring. The launch ring, along with the rocket stand, were restored in the late 1990s. The destructive salt atmosphere has already begun to attack the metal portions of the structure. This image was taken prior to that restoration effort. For an idea of how it now looks go to Launch Ring Restored, Complex 34, CCAFS, FL.
Complex 34 was the launch site of Apollo 7 which carried Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, R. Walter Cunningham into orbit aboard the first Apollo mission.
Complex 34 is also the site of the tragic Apollo I fire which claimed the lives of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.
