Stenciled on many of the buildings, including the rocket stand at Complex 34, are the words ABANDONED (or ABANDON) IN PLACE. This is civil engineering term referring to the fact that these facilities are no longer in use and will not be demolished either. Many of these structures at Cape Canaveral are either historic in nature and/or are too difficult to demolish due to their ability to withstand rocket launches and failures.
Abandoned In Place/Peace is so titled due to the stencil appearing to have at one point read Abandon In "Peace." When the rocket stand was restored in 1998, sandblasting required the stencil to be repainted, destroying this subtle tribute to the Apollo One astronauts Chaffee, Grissom, and White. To see how the rocket stand looked after restoration, go to Launch Ring Restored, Complex 34, CCAFS, FL.
