Complex 34's rocket stand held the Saturn IB rocket which carried Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, and R. Walter Cunningham into orbit aboard Apollo 7, the first Apollo mission. In the background are the two flame deflectors, one of which would be positioned under the launch pad to direct the rocket exhaust away from critical launch facilities and the rocket itself.
Complex 34 is also the site of the tragic Apollo I fire which claimed the lives of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.
The launch ring was restored in
1998. For an idea of how it now looks go to Launch
Ring Restored, Complex 34, CCAFS, FL. The ring is already showing signs
of rust after only a few years. Cape Canaveral has one of the most corrosive
atmospheres of any place on earth.
