Vandenberg Air Force Base is one of only four orbital launch facilities in the continental United States. Still actively launching expendable rockets, the Air Force had built a Space Shuttle Launch Facility (see above), only to discontinue plans to launch Air Force shuttle missions from Vandenberg after the Challenger accident.
