This wreath was placed in honor of the Apollo I astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee who died in the tragic Apollo One fire at Complex 34. The wreath had been placed about a year prior to this photograph being made. To see this wreath shortly after it was placed at Complex 34, go to Wreath, Complex 34, CCAFS.
For a number of years only a small,
private service was held on January 27th each year to honor the Apollo I astronauts.
Beginning in the mid 1990s, a more formal ceremony has been held each year,
including family members, fellow astronauts, and former space industry workers.
